Sea Yarns and Soda — A Little Date Story
February 10th, 2007 by Charla
Sometimes you meet someone online, and after fits and starts, over the course of many months or even longer…the time is ripe in both of your respective situations to book an offline date. You ain’t got nothing else going on. You need to get out and socialize for a couple of hours. You think that, sure, maybe fate has brought you to each other’s attention online for a reason. But you really have no expectations. Because even online, I think, and even on JDate or Match, you can most often predict the ultimate likelihood of that elusive elixer that makes all else possible — chemistry.
Such was this situation. A first meeting with a JDate guy. A Hollywood writer and macher, by his own account, of the first order. Long-time occupant of most popular spot amongst JDate search results in his category. In his profile and correspondance, he actually demonstrates lively wit, not just says, “I have a great sense of humor” …classic online dating profile red flag along with such claims as “Love beach walks at sunset.”
No chemistry. No problem. It went both ways. Keepsake, the directions to his boat, where we met for a glass of soda and a coupl’a sea yarns. Which conclude:
“I’ll see you around 4:00-ish this aft (Friday). If you have any problems, or become delayed, lost, or stopped by tricycle riding over-zealous Homeland
Security Guards, dial, or punch my cell — ##########. Drive carefully.”
Wit, careful attention to the logistics of dating, decent politics, creativity…he’s been on JDate forever, like me….hmmmmm…think I’ll send him a personal invitation and link to flirtysomething.
